How we estimate, reconcile, and mathematically calibrate the proportions of the great dragons.
Sizing Lore & Sourcing Hierarchy
In George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire and Fire & Blood, dragon sizes are described through evocative comparisons—skulls the size of carriages, jaws wide enough to swallow an aurochs or mammoth whole, and wings casting shadows that darkened entire towns.
Because canonical metric numbers are rarely written in text, our figures are synthesized using three primary tiers of data:
- Book Canon (GRRM Lore & Fire & Blood): Comparative skull dimensions displayed in the Red Keep Throne Room, relative battle accounts (e.g. Vhagar being five times the size of Arrax and twice the size of Caraxes), and relative beast age.
- Production Visual FX & Concept Assets: VFX scale models and photogrammetry rigs built by the production art teams for HBO's House of the Dragon and Game of Thrones.
- Citadel Archives & Community Consensus: Scholarly fan consensus compiled across the ASOIAF Wiki and Citadel archives.
